Going from weekend trips to longer stays on the property requires getting things in order at home first. Planning and testing up front removes a huge amount of stress when moving to an off-grid property for the weekend or full-time.

The term “first-flush” refers to the initial runoff from a rain event, which can carry higher concentrations of pollutants, debris, and contaminants that have accumulated on surfaces since the last rain. Managing first-flush water is important for protecting water quality, especially in urban areas. Here are some key points on creating a simple first-flush system from a 5-gallon bucket.

This filter collects most of the fine sentiment, keeps out the mesquites, and anything larger that sneeked through.
