The Creek: Wild Turkey in Arkansas

Wild Turkey in Arkansas

Wildlife out at The Creek

Wild turkeys are native to Arkansas and are an important part of Arkansas’ wildlife heritage. Arkansas provides excellent habitat for wild turkeys, including forests, fields, and wetlands.

There are two main subspecies of wild turkey in the state.

The Eastern Wild Turkey is the most common species. It is found just about everywhere throughout the state and thrives in hardwood forests, pine forests, and mixed habitats.

The Rio Grande Wild Turkey is found mostly in the western part of Arkansas, near the Oklahoma border. It prefers more open, arid habitats like grasslands and river bottoms.
